The Annual Show for 2009 was successful and
there was overall a good quantity of entries despite the appalling weather
conditions that August brought.
All Horticultural Sections had a
reasonable entry and the quality was of a high standard, disappointingly the
Floral Art Classes did not have the support of previous years and the overall
winner was Mrs Doreen Gordon. The Pot Plant Section was dominated by Mr Bob
Douglas who cleared up all the trophies in the section. Flower Section was
again in the hands of Mr John Watson and the Highest Aggregate for classes 46
to 51was again awarded to Mrs Jean Thomson, The Dawson Trophy for 1 H/T Rose
went to Mrs Sheila Mason, once again the Vegetable Classes went to Mr George Harrison
and the award of the James T.S. Harper Trophy for 2 Cabbaes was again won by Mr
Graham Thomas. Mr Harrison also obtained the Highest Aggregate for the Harvey
Cup for classes 1 – 86.
The Industrial Section had some new names
amongst prizewinners and The Riccarton Industrial Trophy went to Currie
S.W.R.I, in the Home Baking Section Mrs Sheila Mason gained the Livingston
Trophy and Preserves Mrs Jean Thomson gained the award for the Highest
Aggregate and the Best Exhibit. The Charlton Trophy for Needlework went to Mrs M. Hinselwood and Catriona Reid
got the Inverarity Salver for the Best Exhibit in the Needlework Classes.
Overall for all three sections (Home Baking, Preserves, Needlework) the
Poppelwell Cup for the Highest Aggregate went to Mrs Sheila Mason.
The Challenge Cup for the S.W.R.I Section
went this year to Juniper Green S.W.R.I.
The Novice Cup this year had a good entry
and the winner was eleven year old Ramsay McEwan, well done Ramsay
For the first time in many years the
Children’s Sections were well supported and it was nice to see that so many
youngsters took part actively encouraged by Parent and Teachers. In the
Miniature Gardens and Vegetable Sculpture Classes this year sponsored by
Balerno Children’s Gala, medals were awarded to: Iona MacDonald, Nicolas Reid,
Andy Nicol, Gabby Bingham, Ronnan Blair, Annie Nicol and Erin Cullie, the award
for the best Miniature Garden overall went to Annie Nicol.
Well done to all these prizewinners and to
all the other entrants who gained prize cards but no trophies, to them better
luck next year. Amongst the list of Trophy Winners there are some who year in
year out carry off the major trophies, this is largely because they have
experience over the years and sadly still do not get much competition, they
would welcome some stiffer competition so those who gained prize cards but no
trophies, think about extending your Show Bench Entries in 2010. You may just
amass enough points to win a Trophy.
Please note that the Annual General Meeting
of the Society will take place on Monday 12th October, 7 pm at
Balerno High School, prize monies are paid out at this meeting and the
committee would like to see more than just the existing committee members and
usually one or two others at this meeting. Currie Show is for everyone and your
views and opinions are welcome. Please make an effort to come along.
Currie Show is the quintessential village show and does not require the same level of horticultural expertise that is required for major shows such as Southport, Ayr, and Dundee etc. Although there are records that flower shows have been held in Currie in the 1840’s. The Scotsman Archive has reference to Shows held in Balerno and the earliest date for Balerno is 1868. As yet there is no detail to be had about these 19th Century Balerno Shows and the History Society cannot as yet provide any information. Perhaps locked away in a trunk in someone’s attic there may just be some old and dusty documents, newspaper clippings, old photographs etc. Should anyone have any information the Society would like to hear from you.
All that is asked of
you is that you enter into the spirit of a community event either as an entrant
or as a spectator, or preferably both.
The Constitution of the Society is to promote a taste for Gardening in all its branches and also Industrial Work amongst amateurs resident or who attend work or take part in any recreational activity within the Parish of Currie and Juniper Green and for the encouragement of Industrial Work.
